Heartland Presbytery and the Prevention of Gun Violence

At the January 20, 2024 meeting of Heartland Presbytery, in the report of the Mission and Social Justice Committee, a task force on gun violence prevention was presented. Its mission is to bring to the congregations specific actions in which each church can participate to actively implement a witness to Christ’s call for the church to be an instrument of peace and justice through engaging in a public witness to prevent gun violence, a pandemic in our communities.

At the 2014 General Assembly a call said, “encourage the church at every level—from individual member to congregation, presbytery, synod, and national church—to become informed and active in preventing gun violence” and urges that “the church take responsibility to build public awareness of gun violence and the epidemic of preventable gun-related deaths.”
